Keys locked in running car 😳

I had similar situation a BMW in the 90's where the security system prevented the passenger inside from being able to open windows or unlock the car, and eventually had to break rear door glass after speaking with BMW service by phone from outside the car where they couldn't figure out how I could get in or the passenger could get out.

It was a weird situation where BWM had fobs that were separate from the key, and the fob was optional as you could lock the car from outside with the key, which I did so I didn't have to carry the fob.

In this case, I locked the car from outside using the key, and through an open back window, I tossed the key back into the car to the passenger, who closed the window and then the security system locked down the car as a result of me locking the door from the outside. She was inside with the key but the security system would not let her unlock the doors, open the windows or start the car with the key. It would only allow unlocking the car with the key from outside the car (or using the fob which I didn't have), so I had to break a rear door glass as we were hours from home in order to get the key to unlock the door.

Ever since, I always keep the key in my pocket
